This is Violence Campaign & Economic Abuse Laws
Good Shepherd have launched a campaign to raise awareness about economic abuse.
We are calling on Ministers, Members of Parliament, and Government officials to recognise financial control, ruined credit, withheld payments and coerced loans and debt as forms of family violence, and to improve our laws and systems that entrap victim-survivors and perpetuate the harm caused by these forms of family violence.
Policy recommendations have been developed in close partnership with the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges, and are endorsed by around 80 other organisations from across the family violence, financial, and gender equity sectors. Tougher laws needed to tackle economic abuse.
Economic abuse is family violence and people using money to trap or control others need to be held accountable through tougher laws, according to a collective of social services and financial groups. The groups are calling for economic abuse to be recognised as a distinct form of family violence in law. Good Shepherd is one of the groups leading the campaign, and policy lead Brittany Goodwin spoke to Lisa Owen.
