Wāhine Māori overrepresented in the criminal justice system
Key Findings:
In the year to June 2025, wāhine Māori made up 15 percent of women in Aotearoa New Zealand, yet they represent:
- 44 percent of women who were proceeded against by Police
- 49 percent of women who entered court
- 66 percent of women who were remanded in custody
- 71 percent of women who were sentenced to imprisonment.

NEW LEGISLATION - Victims of Family Violence (Strengthening Legal Protections) Legislation Act 2025
Important new legislation to recognise and reduce the incidence of the Family Court system being used to perpetrate further acts of post relationship coercive control.
Acts of court systemic coercion is often the only way for an abuser to retain control over a primary victim post separation. Court and Litigation abuse is merely another tool in the coercive control kete.
